Desires of the Dead”Desires of the Dead” is the 2d installment in ‘The Body Finder’ series. I liked the first book but was not happy with the crime part of the story. But I still wanted to read and see how things went afterwards so I picked up the second book. Crime and romance go well together, I mean it is a good combination to read. OK, may be this two shouldn’t really go together, but what I meant was it is fun to read.

Dead bodies calls to Violet, not only that but the murderers will also have this different smell and aura around them which will attract her like magnet. This echos and imprints help her to solve the crime cases for her uncle and father who works in the crime related department. Only those closer to her know about her capacity but when a dead boys body calls her she gets into trouble, now FBI are aware of her special instincts and they want her to tell everything about it. When she is happy dating her best friend Jay, there is this new guy and his sister in town who are kind of obstacle for her love life.

I rated this book- 3 out 5, compared to the first book it was brilliantly written. There was lot of suspense and crime detail involved which made this book an interesting read.

Hannibal ”Hannibal” is 3rd book in Hannibal Lecter series. Lecter is one of the most appalling, brilliant, classy, terrifying, ruthless and popular characters of fiction world. Widely known as ‘Hannibal the Cannibal’. I agree its hard to live up to the success of ”The Silence of the Lambs”. But author had done pretty good job with this book. Other than ”not as good as expected” ending I liked the book.

After 7 years of Dr. Lecter’s escape he is back but this time to help  FBI agent Clarice Starling, the woman who once stood for him and in a way responsible for his escape.  FBI agent Clarice Starling is facing some serious issues and Lecter wants to help her. But there is someone out there waiting for his revenge on Dr.Lecter, who is more than willing to do anything to get to him. Clarice Starling is going to be pawn for corrupt people who take orders from insane multimillionaire.

My rating is 3. I wanted to give 4 but then the ending was not at all satisfying. I almost felt like Thomas Harris went out of his way to include tawdry little details in his book and that cheapened it.

*Spoilers Alert*

  • did we really need a body-building lesbian sister, after her brother’s sperm?
  • did we need to feed a man, parts of his own brain?
  • did we need man eater Pigs?
  • Did we need Clarice Starling to get brain dead and follow Dr. Lecter?

I wanted more actions from Clarice Starling‘s side and there was not much. I liked how the actions and suspense played in the story but I am disappointed with the ending. More than crime thriller it felt like a sappy romantic ending. There is more book in the series – ”Hannibal Rising” I think its about Lecter’s childhood life, so the story of Clarice Starling almost ends here.

Zom-BZom-B is a YA story about zombie apocalypse. It has a different approach with subjects like racism and abusing. I liked the way this book was introduced and I am sure its a good starting to the series. Lot of surprises and suspense materials will give a strong hold on the story and it is very quick read.

B is a teen living in England with a racist, abusive father who drinks too much and beats B and B’s mother on a daily basis. Weird thing is, B loves him and hates him at the same time for his despicable bias. Just to please him B has to hit kids from other religion and skin color.  By becoming a teen who is a trouble-maker, fighter, and racist B is trying to make him proud. But something is happening in the world recently, the news about zombies is spreading all over and B has seen some weird people hanging around. But when zombies attack the school there is no time to panic, B and friends are searching for a way out but seems like the attack was planned and door are locked. Who is behind these attacks? What are these creatures called zombies?

This book is more about B than zombies. The exciting stuff didn’t happen until the end. I was so surprised to find out about B at the end. ( I am not going to spoil that for you, I have tried so much to hide that in my review) I totally did not expect that. My rating 3 out of 5. I recommend this book to zombie fiction fans, but there is not a lot of action but I am sure other books in the series will have that covered.

The body finderI really don’t know how to rate this book, I did enjoy it in parts and it was definitely not boring, but I had expected more. The Body Finder is first book in ”The Body Finder” series. It has got some great imaginations and ideas.

Violet can sense echoes, feelings, smells, colors or sounds left behind by murder victims, which not only make it possible for her to locate dead bodies but also to find their murderer. So far she had to deal with finding dead animals but when a cruel serial killer is on the loose in her hometown she witnesses more than that. When she finds victims of this killer she believes it to be her responsibility to stop him. With her ability to smell and sense the murderer she starts off to find him but soon she realizes that she is in danger. In meantime she has to deal with  Jay, her best friend since childhood and fast growing feelings for him.

The crime part was flat here, I expected a list of suspects and bit more action. It was more into romantic kind, but I enjoyed reading this book. The concept is new and fresh. My rating: 2 out of 5. I may read the sequel but not anytime soon.

My life as a white thrash zombie“It reminds me of an old joke: What did the Zombie say to the whore?”
I looked at him blankly. “Um….what?”
He winked. “Keep the tip.”

My life as a white thrash zombie is the first book in ”White Thrash Zombie” series. In this book zombies are shown in different angle.  In every other book you might have read about walking dead zombies killing people mindlessly. But in book our zombie has a life which apparently sucks but like all normal teenagers it has problems in life.

Angel Crawford is your typical white trash chick with a pill popping addiction and with a addicted boyfriend living with her alcoholic dad in Louisiana. One day she finds herself in hospital waking up from a bad accident with no memory of what really happened. Hospital staff say that she was found butt naked lying on road but no one knows what is the true story. She finds a note addressed to her saying that she is required to take a job otherwise she will be dead, thinking that this note is from her parole officer and that she’s being threatened with jail she opts to take the job instead. Now she is working in Coroner’s Office as a driver and helper in postmortem of dead bodies. Angel starts noticing odd changes like how she’s somehow able to stand the sight of the dead bodies when before the accident she was squeamish from just the sight of blood. She also starts noticing that the bodies have a pleasant scent to them like chocolate and cookies and biscuits and gravy and everything else that was delicious. Bodies start turning up all over town with their heads missing and it begins to look suspiciously like a rogue zombie just trying to get his next meal. Angel is so close to find out who is the murderer but her suspect ends up as next victim.

There is a lot of humor and suspense which will make the book interesting to read. My rating: 3 out of 5. It is a must read if you are a zombie fiction fan.

amelia anne is dead and gone”Amelia Anne is Dead and Gone” is YA fiction. It is a well written book with small town setting and parallel character development. The story goes around a murder case but if you think its just another crime novel, you are wrong.

Becca is a small town girl with her big ambitions to break free. But  discovery of an unidentified dead girl on the side of a dirt road sends everyone including Becca into into a tailspin. Becca’s summer and the last chapters from dead girl Amelia’s life are woven in parallel manner.

This book’s title and cover are captivating, despite my desire to like this book, it just fell short of every expectations. But have to agree with wonderful writing of Kat Rosenfield. But I personally did’t feel closer to any character. There was no love in relations and the characters were just twisted according to the plot. The ending was unbelievable and unsatisfying. Main story and sub story was tangled and at some point it lots its sense. Everything was so convoluted. My rating: 2 out of 5. I gave this rating by keeping the story in mind.  But personally I feel that Kat Rosenfield is a gem of a writer and her writing skills are amazing but just this story didn’t make sense to me.

Battle RoyaleFrom a long time I wanted to read this book and never got a chance to read. ”Battle Royale” is a Japanese novel written by Koushun Takami, later translated to English by Yuji Oniki. I picked it up because somewhere I read a review of Hunger games complaining that the story line is adapted from Battle Royale.

Battle Royale starts with a bus filled with 42 students, going for a school trip. Bus is hijacked and students wake up in unknown place filled with gun holding heartless people. Soon they realize that they are picked by Government to compete in a deadly survival competition on a deserted island. But the competition is not easy, they are forced to kill their classmates and friends and only one person can be announced as the winner and he/she can go out of the Island alive.

Whenever I think of this book I wonder how author came up with so many ways of killing people in his story. It takes more than guts to write a book like that. Other than the concept of the competition this book is nothing like Hunger Games.

Difference between Hunger Games and Battle Royale:

  • HG was more into teenage drama and YA fiction where BR is into political drama and violence.
  • In HG you will know the background story of only Katniss and Peta from district 12  but BR somehow manages to tell the story of almost all students. Its like you know their story when they are dying.
  • In HG people do not know each other its easy for them to kill other than that one person from their District and in BR 40 students knew each other well, they were in same school, some had crushes and serious relationships so it is kinda more difficult to kill.

Its very difficult to remember all those Japanese names, but as 85%  of the students die as soon as possible without much significance to the story you don’t have to worry about remembering all their names. So totally Battle Royale is a good read if you are ready to read some adrenal pumping, gut shaking violence and bloodshed. My rating: 3 out of 5. I wanted to give 4 after reading the excellent climax but how the story ended left me hanging in the middle so I had to change my mind and give it 3.
