Jessica Rules The Dark Side Beth Fantaskey”Jessica Rules the Dark Side” is the second book in Jessica series. I can’t believe that I enjoyed the first  book in this series so much and gave 4 stars out of 5.But the second book was very disappointing, I felt that it was a failed attempt for writing a mystery + romance novel. This is what happens when a happy ending book gets a sequel.

The plot picks up with Jessica already married to Lucius and now a full-time princess struggling with her duties. She’s worried about not being good enough for Lucius, not being confident or knowledgeable enough to rule the vampires  and not being brave enough to fulfill the tasks given to her.Things gets harder when Lucas becomes suspect for murdering his uncle and Jessica has to send him to jail. But she believes that he didn’t commit this murder. She has to collect the evidences to prove his innocence before he gets into comma forever due to starving with out blood. Who is the master mind behind the well plotted game? Will she be able to find out the murderer and free her husband?

The mystery was very much predictable and there was not a proper story, by mixing her best friend’s love life and Lucas’s cousin’s problems this book became more painful to read. My rating: 1 out of 5. There are no sequels to this so I think this is the ending of Jessica series.

Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea I’m kind of torn with this book. I am utterly uncertain about how I feel for this book. Did I love it or did I hate it? I really don’t know. Set up and atmosphere gets 5 stars but mystery and romance is what I didn’t quite buy as much as I wanted to.

Violets parents have been in Paris for months now. They are off exhibiting their paintings there, leaving Violet with her brother Luke. When they run out of money violet decides to rent out the guesthouse and a teenager named River West comes to live in their guesthouse. But strange things begin to happen around and their small town is in chaos. Violet’s grandmother always warned her about the Devil, but she never said he could be a dark haired sexy teenager for whom violet will fall for.

I liked the story, it was really creepy and for some odd reasons I like creepy stories. If you are looking for a good paranormal mystery with a little Gothic touch then this is perfect choice. My rating: 3 out of 5.

KillerKiller is the sixth book in the ”Pretty Little Liars” series and every book gets our 4 girls from Rosewood in to more and more danger. After fourth book I kinda got fed up with the series, I felt like the author is dragging the story by repeating the same thing like Spencer’s parents problem, Hanna’s dad’s problem and her battle to become queen bee of Rosewood, Aria’s confusion of falling with wrong guy every time and Emilie’s dating issues.

Hanna is fighting with her step sister for queen bee position and for getting that they both are trying for same sophomore guy. Spencer is in search of her real mother, looking at the way her parents her treating her she doubts that she is their own child. Aria is into a boy, her old crush but when everything is going so well his past stars haunting her as ghost. Emilie as usual into boy friend issues. Every single problem is created by A. When they thought that Mona, the A is dead and Ian is in jail for Ali’s murder, a new A emerges from the shadows who knows their hidden secrets and lies.

My rating: 3 out of 5. Its my standard rating for the books from Pretty Little liars series.

The Zahir”All you have to do is to pay attention; lessons always arrive when you are ready, and if you can read the signs, you will learn everything you need to know in order to take the next step”

-Paulo Coelho, The Zahir

Another novel by Paulo Coelho, my favorite author. This book was nothing like I expected. I was expecting a lot of inspiration and new thins to learn from this book but unfortunately I was disappointed. End was not that fulfilling and I was not connected to the main characters like how I usually do with the main characters of Paulo Coelho’s books. The Sufi concept mentioned in this book was good and as I already did my small research on the subject while reading ”The Forty Rules of Love”  by the author- Elif Shafak, it was easy to understand. It is a new concept but usual Paulo Coelho thing was missing from this story.

The narrator of ”The Zahir” is a best selling novelist and enjoys his life. While he is busy enjoying his life with money and celebrity status, his wife of ten years a war correspondent disappears with her friend Mikhail. Was she kidnapped, murdered or just escaped with lover? no one knows. But one day narrator finds out this Mikhail and the door to whole new truth about his wife opens.

It is good read, but I personally did’t like it much. May be I was expecting too much from this book. My rating: 2 out of 5. As a hard core fan of Paulo Coelho I have decided to read his all novels so one ‘not that good book’ can’t change my decision.

mazerunnerI am back from my short vacation to beautiful Bali ( Indonesia), island of strong Hindu culture and heritage. Now I have 15 books in my ”read” list to be reviewed. I have read 78 books so far towards my Goal of reading 100 books ( Good reads 2013 reading challenge). Relaxed by wonderful holiday I am ready to read more books 🙂

The Maze runner is young adult science fiction, where teenagers are locked inside the maze, with out any memory of out side world. Thomas is new guy in the maze, he wakes up in his lift without any memory of past. But he remembers his name, when the lift opens he is not alone. He is welcomed by group of boys to Glade covered by stone walls. No one remembers anything except their names. Here every morning the stone doors to the maze that surrounds them have opened. Every night they’ve closed tight. And every thirty days a new boy has been delivered in the lift. This system never failed, until Thomas showed up. Because very next day lift delivers another person but this time it is a girl. First girl to ever arrive in Glade. Thomas feels familiar  feeling towards her. Thomas might be someone important than he could ever guess!

It is wonderful tale of fiction. I recommend this to ”Hunger Games” fans,it will not disappoint you. Movie adaptation by the same name is releasing by 2014. Dylan O’Brienas Thomas is in main role. I liked him from Teen wolf series, he is really good!

 Dylan O'Brien in Maze runner

A Bend in the Road Nicholas Sparks books are like comfort food, you need them once in a while to feel good.”A Bend in the Road” is a romance and mystery smash up, unlike other books from this author.

Miles Ryan’s, deputy sheriff of New Bern is living with only one goal- that is to catch the person who killed his wife in hit and run accident. He doesn’t believe that it is an accident, he thinks it as crime. He lives with his son Jonah and all the time worries about him and wants to bring the man to justice who took away Jonah’s mother and his wife. Then Miles meets Sarah, Jonah’s second grade teacher who moved recently to New  Bern, hoping to start over a nasty divorce. Soon Miles and Sarah are falling in love but they are unaware of a secret which is bound to them. Once the secret is out it will make them question everything, including their love.

It is a good novel, with lot of emotions, romance and a little mystery. Surprisingly I didn’t cry this time reading this book as I do always while reading books from this author. My rating: 3 out of 5. A good read, recommended for people who are looking for a light read filled with emotions.

Red Dragon I loved Dr. Hannibal Lecter from the book ”The silence of the lamb” which is second book in Hannibal Lecter series. Then I decided to read this series to get more details about Hannibal Lecter. ”Red Dragon” is the first book and it doesn’t give much information about Hannibal as  Will Graham takes the major role here. But still Hannibal succeeded to give the readers  creepy feelings few times.

FBI Special Will Graham has retired and lives  with his new wife Molly and her son Willie. He is retired becuase of the nearly fatal encounter with Hannibal Lecter, whose capture he was responsible for. But then his peaceful life was disturbed by his old boss when he came asking for help catching a serial killer named ” Tooth fairy” who killed two families so far. The Tooth Fairy, a serial killer who is named becuase of the tooth marks he leaves and for dicing his victims with shards of broken mirrors. But Will Graham decides to visit Hannibal in his asylum where he is kept guarded. But his encounter with Hannibal brings back the memory and the bitter realization that he can track killers becuase he can think like a killer. Killer is a fan of Hannibal and soon he tries to get in touch with Hannibal through letters and papers which is found out by FBI. Will Graham in his weak mental condition can he catch the killer? Who is this Killer who calls himself as The Red Dragon? What is the mystery behind all these murders?

I totally liked this book. Unlike other books it gives complete information about killer somewhere when you reach the middle of the novel. You will  know who is the killer, his childhood and his mental condition.  It’s like  you are just witnessing how he is killing and how FBI is working to catch him. The mystery is revealed in the beginning but getting hold of this mystery is a big mystery. I liked author’s  writing style. My rating: 3 out of 5. I heard there is a movie adaption by the same name, planing to watch it soon.

Reptide I got this book from some random book store last year. I wasn’t aware of the author or the title before, just picked up because wanted to read something new and different. This was lying in my ”to read” list from one year and finally I read it last month. This is really kind of different from what I usually read. This is thriller, murder mystery with lot of suspense and twist.

Sergeant Sarah Delaney has a past which is haunting her everyday. But it becomes worse when she is assigned to solve a murder mystery in Caxton, the place where her boyfriend Tom had lived – and where he died. When she goes to Caxton, to those places and beaches where she lived before and had memories created, her past slowly starts to reveal. Not only past but also a mystery which is related to current murder. What is her past? Is it related to the current murder case? What had happened to her boy friend, even though he is dead why does she hate him?

It is  a good time pass mystery novel to read. In few places I found loose ends, where the story could have been more strong. But over all a good story with fine twists. Not that predictable ending! My rating: 2 out of 5.

Room emma donoghueToday I’m five. I was four last night going to sleep in Wardrobe, but when I wake up in Bed in the dark I’m changed to five, abracadabra. Before that I was three, then two, then one, then zero. “Was I minus numbers?”

One Room, one world! Story of Jack and Ma for whom their room is their world it is not that they like it, but they don’t have any option. Ma is surviving in single room with her kid Jack, who knows nothing about out side world. Keeping him safe is the first thing on her mind. Jack knows only 2 people, Ma and Old nick who comes only at night time and Jack sees him from his vantage point in a wardrobe.  Jack is satisfied and happy being with Ma as he has no idea whats outside. But Ma is sad because she wants to get her freedom back. You can see 2 different perspectives, two ways of looking at life.

I respect Ma for her creativity and courage to keep a child, even though  Jack’s Biological father is Old nick, her kidnapper. The way she thinks to keep him safe, entertained in all possible ways, how she uses the  tricks to escape. If you think escaping makes their life easier you are wrong. Imagine Ma who goes out after being in a room for 7 years. Even though she is seen 19 years of outside world before its not the same. And imagine Jack, who is never seen anything from outside, not even through a window, how can he adjust to sudden change like that?

Its a wonderful book, Jack is sweet and his way of thinking is very cute. His usage of   grammar is hilarious 🙂 Kidnapping is serious crime. Kidnapping and keeping a person for years and using her physically is cruel, disgusting thing to do! This is really a good read. My rating: 3 out of 5. I was reading a review and found out that such cases happens, if you can type Josef Fritzl and search in Google you will find out something 100 times cruel than what happened in this book.

House RulesI think cats have Asperger‘s. Like me, they‘re very smart. And like me, sometimes they simply need to be left alone

– Jacob ”House Rules” by Jodi Picoult

This is the third Jodi Picoult book I’ve read, the first two being “Picture Perfect” and “My Sister’s Keeper”. I liked both the books but one thing I found similar, that is  illness. May be its memory loss as in ”Picture Perfect” or it is leukemia as in ”My sister’s keeper”.  For my surprise ”House Rules” is also about a medical condition and here it is Asperger‘s syndrome. I have read recently a book about autism (”Curious Case of Dog in the Night Time” where the main character has autism) and found similar symptoms. I am not sure if both Asperger‘s and autism falls into same category.

I love the story line in this book, but it seemed to drag on forever! Emma Hunt is single mother taking care of her eighteen-year-old son Jacob who has Asperger‘s and Theo her 15 year old normal son. Asperger’s syndrome, a disorder characterized by a compulsive attachment to order and routine, a tendency to take comments literally, hypersensitivity to bright lights, human touch, and scratchy fabrics, a reluctance to make eye contact, lack of empathy, painful bluntness, and difficulty relating to others. Theo loves his brother but being normal makes him neglected. Jacob is found of crime busters series and loves to set up his own crime scene at home with corn syrup for Emma to find out the crime. He is  not friendly with everyone but he is very close to his tutor Jess. One fine day she goes missing and Jacob is murder suspect. Who killed Jess? Why Jacob was suspected? Will he be able to prove his innocence when he can’t even make eye contact?

Its a time pass story, my rating : 3 out of 5. Wanted to give 2 but the thriller story line increased my rating. Its a good book if you are mystery fan. Book started off well with lot of suspense in it, but sadly by end there was hardly suspense left.
