Hell House by Richard Matheson Richard Matheson is one of my favorite authors, ”I am legend” is one hell of a horror novel.  ”Hell House” is not that special compared to the other two books I have read from this author. It seems obviously inspired by Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House which I read few days back. But this book is more creepier than ‘The Haunting Hill House’ where the haunting was imaginary and bit confusing.

Welcome to my house, I’m delighted you could come. I am certain you will find your stay here most illuminating. It is regrettable I cannot be with you, but I had to leave before your arrival. Do not let my physical absence disturb you, however. Think of me as your unseen host and believe that, during your stay here, I shall be with you in spirit.” ~ Emeric Belasco

This book begins with the new owner of the house assembling a crew to determine what, if anything, haunts this tomb-like mansion. The crew consists of Dr. Lionel Barrett (a scientist), his wife Edith, Benjamin Franklin Fischer (a physical medium whom had experienced the house previously and survived when all his crew members were dead), and Florence Tanner (a mental medium with a profound religious faith). They all set to this haunting house where Emeric Belasco used to receive his guests, soon they find out that these guests never left that place. It was a hell indeed for people who stayed there, hell with pleasure.

Author opens a door to this sinister world of sexual exploitations, physical cruelties and mental games. Soon this crew will find their own hell in this hell house. This book was published in 1971, so there is a classic touch to it.   My rating: 3 out of 5. I recommend this to horror fiction fans out there who like some good dose of creepiness.

Zom-B Gladiator by Darren Shan Zom-B Gladiator is the 6th book in Darren Shan’s Zom-B series. Before I start about this book I would like to thank the author for writing this amazing series. Dam I have to wait until I get my hands on the next book! This book is my favorite one  in this series so far. Zom-B and gladiator is a nice combination, as the title suggests it is very interesting read.

B is training and into rescue missions with her teammates, she is one of Dr. Oystein’s angels now. But one day she is kidnapped by few people whom she crossed paths with earlier and gets into a place where some sick individuals are killing zombies for fun. Like a gladiator game between walking dead and helpless people. What will B do when she is stuck with this twisted people? Who will rescue her? Will she be able to get away from that hell?

My rating: 4 out of 5. I am eager to read the next books in the series as soon as possible. B is really cool and composed in all situations, she is a true kick ass heroine.

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness”A Monster Calls” by Patrick Ness is a perfect modern fairytale but not a Disney one with princess and birds. It is cruel yet kind, beautiful but  terrible at the same time. A achingly beautiful story of a young kid who is struggling to adjust with the sudden changes in his life.

Conor is struggling with his mother’s sickness. The result of which leads to him being the target of bullying and losing close friends. He tries to keep away from everyone but this results in a monster’s entry to his life. This monster is very old and different from the monster which visits him everyday in his nightmare. This monster will tell Conor three stories to help him and in return Conor will tell a fourth story – one deadly truth.

Here writer had well portrayed the pain and the aching of a fractured kid. It is well illustrated and the story is hauntingly beautiful. There is nothing fake about this book, the pain feels so natural. My rating: 4 out of 5. I recommend this to everyone who is interested to read a good book. I have no more words to describe this book, other than excellent!

The haunting hill house”The Haunting of Hill House” by Shirley Jackson was first published in 1959. What made me pick this book was very promising synopsis and a classic, gothic touch to it.  I love gothic fiction and the descriptions of creepy, unsettling hill house was just perfect. But somehow by the middle of the book I lost my interest. It was more of a mad roller coaster than a horror house story.

In The Haunting of Hill House, Dr Montague, an occult scholar, has gathered with three individuals selected for evidence of psychic abilities, in the old unoccupied mansion with its sad history of deaths, including suicide. The Doctor hopes to find solid evidence for what is called “haunting”. But the house is waiting patiently and planning to choose one person to control and make one of its own.

It was creepy in the beginning but then turned into a story about a young mentally unstable woman losing her mind. I Don’t see any logical explanations for the things they see or at least they think they have seen. There are lot of unexplained things and its upon readers to decide if the haunting was real or just imaginary. My rating: 2 out of 5. I have seen a lot of good reviews but I couldn’t make myself to enjoy this book.

Zom-B Baby Creepiest cover ever! This covers gives me chills. There is one thing about Darren Shan’s books, you think you have an idea what the book is about and all of a sudden you realize that you know nothing about it. Zom-B Baby is the 5th installment of Zom-B series and in this book B must decide whether or not to join the Angels in battling freaky and dangerous clown Mr.Dowling and the mutants.

B is not sure what to believe and what not. She has been training and living with angels for past few months but still she is not able to believe in their motto. She has to think about it so she runs away from there searching for an answer. But soon she has to go through the same streets of London she passed few months ago, filled with walking dead people. But instead of answers to her questions she finds something horrible and more dangerous thing ever.

I don’t want to add any spoilers in my review. When you read it you will come to know what is this horrible thing she found. My rating: 3.5 out of 5. It was really a good read, I finished reading in one sitting. This series is getting more and more creepy. I am now ready to read the next book in the series- Zom-B Gladiator.

Girl in the MirrorShort stories are not my type, I always pick novels over short stories. But I am a huge fan of Cecelia Ahern’s writing so how can I not pick up her book? I must say while I enjoyed the two stories, I was left feeling unsatisfied, not because they were badly written but because the stories were so gripping I wished they were longer. More explanation could have been good. I wonder why she didn’t think about writing a novel with this material.

First story is about the girl in the mirror, it gave me creeps, I felt as if it ended abruptly. If this short story was of novel length it could have been twisted in several ways and I would have enjoyed reading a horror novel. Second story is about ‘The Memory Maker’ a man who invented a machine to hold onto his past. I didn’t understand the message at the end completely but it was a good read. I would prefer if these two stories were separate novels.

My rating: 3 out of 5. If you are a Cecelia Ahern fan or you like to read short stories then this book is recommended for you.

Zom-B AngelsZom-B Angels is the 4th installment in Darren Shan’s ”Zom-B” series. This book was a lot less action packed than the first 3. But it did answer some of the questions that I had been asking during the other books. Here a few more characters are introduced and the story gets a new twist.

After spending few months out side in London with walking dead people B has forgotten about normal life. But soon she finds strange signs all over the city-a “Z” plus red arrows. By Following them, B finds The Angels- a group gathered in the hopes of combating the evil dead and the forces that introduced them. It seems that they are also aware of this hideous and dangerous  joker looking zombie master. Whom are they fighting against? Will B find a reason to join them in this strange battle they all are training for?

My rating: 3 out of 5. I have been giving constant 3 stars to this series from the book 1. This is another interesting book in Zom-B series I enjoyed reading.

Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea I’m kind of torn with this book. I am utterly uncertain about how I feel for this book. Did I love it or did I hate it? I really don’t know. Set up and atmosphere gets 5 stars but mystery and romance is what I didn’t quite buy as much as I wanted to.

Violets parents have been in Paris for months now. They are off exhibiting their paintings there, leaving Violet with her brother Luke. When they run out of money violet decides to rent out the guesthouse and a teenager named River West comes to live in their guesthouse. But strange things begin to happen around and their small town is in chaos. Violet’s grandmother always warned her about the Devil, but she never said he could be a dark haired sexy teenager for whom violet will fall for.

I liked the story, it was really creepy and for some odd reasons I like creepy stories. If you are looking for a good paranormal mystery with a little Gothic touch then this is perfect choice. My rating: 3 out of 5.

Hannibal RisingHannibal Rising is the final installment in Hannibal Lecter series. This story is about Hannibal Lecter’s childhood and the time before he became ”Hannibal the Cannibal”. I loved the first two books in the series and from the third book it went down hill for me. Seriously what is it? mockery at him, the genius of a cannibalistic serial killer. A huge disappointment. I had my hopes way up. Who can blame me? Red Dragon and The Silence of the Lambs were freaking masterpieces. Probably, had I read it before knowing who Hannibal Lecter was, I would’ve enjoyed it more.

Hannibal Lecter was not a killer by birth, there were some situations made him to do it and molded him to what he became later. He was found mute, a chain attached to his neck. His uncle and his beautiful wife, Lady Murasaki took him in. But he is not alone, he has his demons with him in his mental palace. Slowly he tries to visit his demons and gets his memory refreshed. As he becomes friends with this demons, he becomes death’s prodigy.

you were to keep aside the fact that you do not know Hannibal Lecter and none of his traits, then you might enjoy this read. My rating: 2 out of 5.

Zom B UndergroundAfter devouring Zom-B by Darren Shan I was quick to jump into the second book in the series, Zom-B Underground. After the complete shock of book one’s ending, I just had to know what the author was going to throw at the readers next. This book was as good as the first book and I enjoyed reading it. It is a very short read (hardly 2 hours) and I finished reading it in one sitting.

After throwing Taylor to the zombies, B has been turned into one, and is being held at an under ground military facility after coming back to  consciousness. B learns that there are two types of zombies, revitalized and revived zombies. B is revitalized one she gets her memories and consciousness back while revived zombies are walking brain dead killing machines. There are many teenagers who are like her helping the govt to research zombies. Zombies don’t eat the the revitalized ones that is the plus point. But still B has got no answers to her questions about this zombie madness happening worldwide. But soon she will know enough to want to runaway from there.

This book also ends with suspense note, exactly as the first one ended. Unlike first book, this book has got lot of zombie actions. My rating: 3 out of 5. I am definitely continuing this series.
