The Da Vinci Code The Da Vinci Code is  much discussed controversial book of Dan Brown. Believe it or not, last December I started this book  and just couldn’t finish it. I quit hundred times before I finally  finished the book. I really don’t know what was the big hype about but this is surely not what I expected. I liked Angels and Demons better, that’s the first Dan Brown book I read.

Symbologist Robert Langdon was supposed to meet Jacques Sonier one night and instead, he gets called to the Louvre, the scene of Sonier’s horrific death. French police officer, Fache, thinks that Langdon is the murderer. Fortunately, Sophie  intervenes to shunt Langdon away. And then they are off, trying to avoid being arrested, trying to find the “Grail”, and trying to discover who killed Sonier. Now what is this Grail and what is the secret Jacques Sonier was trying to protect even on his deathbed?

Spoilers ahead*

This book has been quite controversial.A lot of Christian and Catholic churches were not happy about the claims Dan Brown makes in this book example how Jesus married Mary Magdalene and how the Church was manipulative in hiding that fact. I am not from this religion so I don’t know much about this. I don’t know if Jesus was married, tradition has it that he was not. I don’t think if you have real faith in someone his marital status will not affect your faith. And more than anything this is just a fictional crime novel which revolves around religion.

My Rating: 2 out of 5. I didn’t like Langdon in this book. He spent a lot of time talking about history, symbols, sacred femininity. This book was boring with a capital ”B”.

Digital FortressThis is the second Dan Brown book I’ve read, actually when I started reading this I was expecting something better than this. But its a good book if you are interested in thrillers. I read many reviews about this book saying most of the software related information are wrong, I don’t have much idea about that because I am not a genius when it comes to computer field. I felt interested only at the end and other than that I found the story little dry. But I liked Angels and Demons compared to this book.

”Digital Fortress” starts out quickly and continues with high speed. The basic outline of story is  is that a  former employee of the NSA has allegedly created an unbreakable encryption algorithm that he’s threatening to release into worldwide effectively rendering the anti-terrorism monitoring programs worthless. However, this man has died – and nobody knows who is now in control of his invention and who has the pass key to unlock it.  Susan a genius code breaker in NSA, is helping to break this problem. What happens to the people involved in NSA? Will they succeed to protect their Data from the new destructive invention?

I should say about authors writing style here, I liked the way he brought suspense in the story with lot of unexpected twists. Over all its a good book, but  I should warn you that read only if you are thriller fan 🙂

Very late for the review! I know, I wanted to read this book long back but some how kept saying to myself ”Later”. I never read any of Dan Brown’s books before. I should say his style of writing is different. Even though this  is historical, scientific friction and thriller novel I caught myself laughing sometimes 🙂

I dont know how accurate is  the information given in this novel but for the first time I came across the word ”Illuminati”. I was not aware of crusades and hassassian things mentioned in the book. While reading the book I searched all the information and read it in between. I was only aware of Indian history and some war in Afghanistan, Kabul, and Bangladesh. So I had to read Vatican history a bit.

Coming to the story,  Robert Langdon, professor of religious iconology and art history at Harvard University is called by Maximilian Kohler, the director of CERN, world’s largest scientific research center to meet him about “Illuminati”. Lenoardo Vetra created the antimatter to simulate the Big Bang but somebody murdered him and stole it form him leaving an “Illuminati” brand on his murdered body. Then Langdon travels to Vatican city  along with Dr. Vetra’s daughter Vittoria Vetra when they get the news that stolen canister is in Vatican city. But Vatican city with the recent death of the Pope, the cardinals of the Catholic Church are all within the city for the conclave to choose the new pope. Langdon and Vittoria Vetra have to find out four kidnaped cardials and locate the canister by tracking the hassassian murderer. How will they find where the murder is going to happen? How can they locate the Canister? Who is behind this? What is this “Illuminati” and its brotherhood?

Even though this was interesting story I speed read it sometimes skipping the explanation about interiors of the place and the conversation between BBC news team. Immediately after reading I watched movie and i was disappointed, they completely ruined the concept.  There was no importance for Hassassian  and most of the characters are changed and even the concept was changed accordingly. There was nothing related to the book.
