Hell House by Richard Matheson Richard Matheson is one of my favorite authors, ”I am legend” is one hell of a horror novel.  ”Hell House” is not that special compared to the other two books I have read from this author. It seems obviously inspired by Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House which I read few days back. But this book is more creepier than ‘The Haunting Hill House’ where the haunting was imaginary and bit confusing.

Welcome to my house, I’m delighted you could come. I am certain you will find your stay here most illuminating. It is regrettable I cannot be with you, but I had to leave before your arrival. Do not let my physical absence disturb you, however. Think of me as your unseen host and believe that, during your stay here, I shall be with you in spirit.” ~ Emeric Belasco

This book begins with the new owner of the house assembling a crew to determine what, if anything, haunts this tomb-like mansion. The crew consists of Dr. Lionel Barrett (a scientist), his wife Edith, Benjamin Franklin Fischer (a physical medium whom had experienced the house previously and survived when all his crew members were dead), and Florence Tanner (a mental medium with a profound religious faith). They all set to this haunting house where Emeric Belasco used to receive his guests, soon they find out that these guests never left that place. It was a hell indeed for people who stayed there, hell with pleasure.

Author opens a door to this sinister world of sexual exploitations, physical cruelties and mental games. Soon this crew will find their own hell in this hell house. This book was published in 1971, so there is a classic touch to it.   My rating: 3 out of 5. I recommend this to horror fiction fans out there who like some good dose of creepiness.

CarmillaCarmilla is a pre-Dracula vampire tale first published in 1872. I was excited to finally read the story that is really the grandmother of the vampire tale. This is a very important book in a historic sense because it was published 25 years before than Dracula. Also, it presented lesbian situations, it was a pioneer book in two subjects- Vampires and Lesbian literature.

The story opens on a young woman, Laura, living with her  father in an isolated Austrian village. A carriage accident forces a matronly women to ask Laura’s father to care for her daughter for a few weeks while she continues her urgent journey. Carmilla is a beautiful girl who is left by her mother starts staying with them, soon Laura notices some attraction between them beyond friendship one can never explain it but only feel. She becomes weak day by day and unnatural deaths around the village speciously goes high.

You can never compare this to modern Vampire novels because it was written centuries back and I think we should appreciate the author for his creativity and imagination which inspired others to write about vampires. My rating: 3 out of 5. It is a must read book if you are a vampire fiction fan.

Perfume“He who ruled scent ruled the hearts of men.”

There are good books, bad books, interesting books and boring books. But there is also another category that’s unique books, it may be bad or good.  This books is chilling tale of murder, something similar to ”The silence of the lambs”. Perfume: The Story of a Murderer is  the great German classic of the 1980s. Few years back when the movie adaption of this novel was on TV I couldn’t watch it thinking it is again another boring story. But now after reading the book I really want to watch the movie.

This book is about Jean Baptiste Grenouille, a orphan born with no scent. No one can smell him as his body does not have any kind of scent. But he is gifted, he can smell anything from far places and store it in his memory and produce it later and feel it for himself. He has the capacity to differentiate and name the scents in one particular scent. But people think he is evil or some kind of bad curse becuase he doesn’t smell, which is the basic thing about humans. His childhood as a tanner, perfumer allows him to learn so many things but he wants to do more. He first murders a red head girl, attracted by her smell. He can remember and re smell it forever but he can’t possess the smell. For that he finds out easy way of storing their smell. From there his murderous journey starts…..

This book is totally unique from the beginning. There is no reason why Grenouille was born without any scent, was he a part of evil? But best part of this book is you get into  Grenouille’s characters and you start imaginary smelling whatever mentioned in the book. Like you can smell river, sweat, sea, air, even you can imagine smelling some perfume from your own imagination. It is a wonderful but cold blooded murder tale of a non scented person in search of scent.

The ExorcistI have never read a story like this before!  Its chilling and frightening.  Its been a long time I have read some real horror after Bram Stoker’s Dracula. This book is horrifying tale of week mind and demon. If you believe there is god, there is also demon for sure. There is always fight between good and evil. But for winning the evil there is always been sacrifices. Inspired by a reported case of exorcism of a child in 1949, The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty, published in 1971, is a novel about demonic terror.

The story starts with the introduction of divorced and well-known actress, Chris McNeil and her daughter, Regan. Regan is taken over by an ancient demon that starts making frightening noises and weird actions as Regan shows psychological and physical change  acts of violence, outbursts, and precocious sexuality  for which neither doctors nor psychologists can’t explain. But they all  think that its becuase of parents divorce, she is taking things to heart. But in spite of all examinations and medicines for days no one knows whats wrong with Regan.

Mean while Jesuit priest and psychologist Damien Karrass is suffering inside. He has lost his faith, and he feels he can no longer minister to other troubled priests in the Order. And he also blames himself for the death of his mother which happened when he was not around. There is been a murder in actress’s house and police are suspicious about a lot of people.

More than horror its shocker. You will be really shocked by the way this story goes on. The actions and activities of possessed Regan, the war inside   Damien Karras’s mind about believing it as demon or psychic disorder is brilliant. I haven’t watched the movie adaption of this book. But I have watched a Bollywood movie which was based on this book.

It is a good read if you are a fan of horror novels . My rating:  4 out pf 5. I recommend this book to only those who can handle reading some real good horror books, otherwise it is really disturbing!

The Picture of Dorian GrayI was attracted by the book title. It sounds like classics. But when I sat to read this I found it ridiculously boring. The story doesn’t start till 100 pages. It is very interesting story but the writing style makes it boring to read!

A beautiful yet naive young Dorian Gray poses for a portrait and silently wishes for his youth forever, but that is granted to him now. His portrait ages and takes all his sins and grows ugly but he looks the same. People are scared of him because he walks and sleeps with sins. Be careful what you wish for, especially when the picture doesn’t just age, but reflects your decisions and innermost desires. The book flowed seamlessly, except for those never-ending pages that list Dorian’s material collections, from beginning to end and his interest in learning new things from all over the world.

It could have been better if there were no boring stuff and never ending paragraphs which doesn’t take the story anywhere. My ratings are 2 out of 5. People who like classics can read this on their own risk. There are  movie adaptions : The Picture of  Dorian Gray (1945) and Dorian Gray (2009). I would like to watch the movie sometime.

Its been a long time that I read “real horror or real Vampire” novel. I am tired of reading same horror novels about Vampire falling in love with human, or a werewolf or a witch or what not?  Finally got a real Classic, Vampire, Gothic novel to read. Thanks to this post I found in a blog I follow- Freepagenumbers after reading this I wanted to read a real horror novel.

Dracula is an 1897 vampire novel written by an Irish author Bram Stoker. This novel is narrated in the form of letters or diary entries in that way reader will know what every character feels or thinks. Here Dracula is not sexist as we read other vampires are. May be becuase its  written in 1897, there is not much about romance.

When Jonathan goes to the countryside of Transylvania to meet up with noble man Count Dracula to discuss about business, he realizes that what you hear as horror stories aren’t stories but real. He learns that castle of Dracula is full of horrifying things and he is a prisoner there. Dracula travels to England by leaving him with his women, who are equally horrifying and undead. From there the real story starts. How Jonathan’s fiance Mina, her friends are involved ? What Dracula wants? How can they hunt him down? How Jonathan can escape from three blood sucking vampire women? To know all these you should read “Dracula”. I am in love with this book  and I got nightmares about this as well ( may be few will find it as little over acting but I really got horrifying dreams 🙂 ) for a while I am in no mood to read any vampire novel and spoil the taste of this wonderful book ( may be I am over acting now 🙂 )

I watched the movie as I always do  most of the time after reading a book. Movie directed by Francis Ford Coppola in 1992 . Its a new version of Dracula. It tells an additional story how “Dracula” became vampire. Mina was revealed here to be the Count Dracula’s greatest love, which is not part of Stoker’s original ( I liked the original concept better than this one). Its completely different than the book. May be I should try watching old versions, Nosferatu,  Tod Browning’s version (1931), Hammer Films version ( 1958).

I was so attracted by the title: “Prom Nights from Hell”. What does prom nights from hell mean to you? Like some sexy vampire will come and kiss you on the prom night?  Or you realize how bad your dress looks when compared to others, or somebody poured mixed fruit punch on your hair and you exactly look like a peacock? Under normal circumstances these things will surely add in the list of prom nights from hell but this book is not about normal circumstances.

The book was released 2 years ago.  It has got 5 short stories by popular authors. Supernatural stories about the prom nights.

The Exterminator’s Daughter, by Meg Cabot. For those who are want to read about vampires. Its a very simple story where Mary, whose mother was a vampire hunter wants to save her friend Lila who is under spell of Dracula’s son. With her own crossbow and a handsome guy Adam in her side will she able to kill the Dracula? What will happen to her prom night?

The Corsage by Lauren Myracle. This story is kinda creepy but good classic horror story. Its about the cursed corsage, Frankie got it from a fortune teller. Frankie wants Will to ask her out for the prom night she wishes for that holding that Corsage from there everything changes.  Will is dying to ask her for prom night I mean literally! Be careful what you wish for.

Kiss and tell by Michele Jaffe.  18 year old Mirinda has superpowers and she wants to save people with it. Sibby is 14 year old girl who cant keep her mouth shut I mean to say she likes to talk and kiss guys. Some people are threatening her life and its up to  Mirinda  to save her. This story is not about prom night but a part of it is related to it.

Madison Avery and the Dim Reaper by Kim Harrison. Its an introduction to the Madison Avery trilogy.Madison is so pissed on the prom night becuase she finds out that she was a pity date and was dumped by a nerd. To make him jealous she leaves the prom with a handsome guy who turns out to be an  evil and kills her. Now she is in between human and ghost form surviving with a stone kind of amulet that she snatched from the guy who killed her.

Hell on Earth by Stephenie Meyer. All twilight fans, here is again a wonderful story. Prom night changes into hell, full of misery night with broken ankles, jewelry, and broken romance. Its all becuase of a new girl Sheba who is 186 years old demon in disguise. Will she be able to spoil the prom night? I liked the ending a lot.

A journey towards  horror, and supernatural prom night. Its not too late to attend a horrifying prom night 🙂
