The god of small thingsAfter reading ”The White Tiger” by Aravind Adiga I really got fascinated towards Booker prize award winner books. I picked up another book  ”The God of Small things” by Indian author Arundhati Roy, for my surprise I totally loved the book. From last 5 years I wanted to read this book, but kept avoiding it thinking award winning books will be boring. Now I will have to change this view towards award winner books.

”The God of Small Things” is really a  master piece. This fiction seems so real here. This is about the sad, poignant breakdown of a family in the 60’s in a place called Kerala, a state in India. It revolves around a woman called Ammu who has twins called Estha and Rahel.  She and her twins reside in an old house with her mother, Mamachi and her cunning aunt, Kochama. She has left her alcoholic husband whom she married against her parent’s will. She finds a lover who is from low caste, and untouchable. Its story of her life, her fight to live. It shows how some people have to really  fight hard to live their life. When Ammu’s brother Chacko  brings his English ex-wife and their daughter for a Christmas visit, the twins learn that things can change in a day and that change changes their life forever.

This book, along with the wonderful story, also focuses on the cruel systems in India such as, cast system, child molestation, male domination etc. Whatever happens here Ammu is the one who suffers. Even though  her husband was alcoholic and was ready to push her  to prostitution people blame Ammu for leaving her husband. It is emotional journey through out the book, we start loving people even the ones who are ugly looking just because they are nice people. You will know answers for all your questions by the end of the book. I was bit disappointed only because of the quick ending, actually I was expecting a complete detailed ending, was looking for something good to happen to the few remaining characters. Anyways it was a good read and my ratings are 4 out of 5.
